An entrepreneur is an individual in the business world who takes on financial risks to operate a business of their own. So, what does it take to become a successful entrepreneur in an economically failing world?
Leadership is key in achieving your personal goals and overall business goals. Sure, as a college student, you should join clubs that you are passionate about. However, you shouldn’t simply join them; lead them. Show determination and commitment by participating in these clubs for your four years, and then eventually (hopefully) receive a promotion to president (or other such leading roles).
Starting your own club will give you more experience in developing your own ideas, pursing your passions, and making them a reality. Never pass up opportunities for independent studies to learn about a topic that you are interested in, read books in your area of choice, and work one-on-one with a faculty member (who you will form a close bond with, and use as another resource for information).
Leadership is an extremely important quality to hold as an entrepreneur, but you must know when to follow as well. Apply for internships, which will allow you to shadow people with careers similar to your interests. If you are unsure of exactly what career this is, then take multiple internships to find out. These different experiences will help you pick a focus for what type of business you may want to become involved with, and one day build. Follow advice of leaders you admire for their abstract thinking, competitiveness, charm, etc.
Even if you intend to start your own business, you still need a qualified résumé. Once again, illustrate your leadership skills wherever possible, as this is a trait that will always attract positive attention. Your GPA will make or break you, athletics will reveal your competitive side, and even high school or college jobs may prove that you have work ethic. Two other parts of your résumé that will make you desirable is double majoring (if possible), and ensuring that your interests are clearly expressed. Both of these things will help you stand out from the other million recent college graduates.
Once you graduate, you should immediately establish a developer and a designer who will assist you both in improving your ideas for the business, and marketing these ideas to gain and keep customers. First, make sure your product or service is one that you and your employees would use, making it so that everyone involved will be even more invested in making the product or service a success. You will have more ideas for a product that you are interested in, rather than one you would never buy.
If your dream is to become an entrepreneur, then search for activities that will make you an extremely well rounded person. This is the only way you will thrive. Push yourself to learn more through academics (you can never have enough knowledge), compete in athletics (business is directly linked with competition), listen to music (good for the soul), and always be a leader.
